The freshman Illinois senator has a long record of favoring gun bans in Chicago and Washington, D.C., and a raft of other gun control bills that are anathema to gun owners, hunters and sportsmen alike.

He insists now he supports Second Amendment gun rights to keep and bear arms that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld when it struck down the D.C. gun ban in June. But he refused to join 77 of his colleagues who signed a friend of the court brief to end the weapons ban and remains sympathetic to a broad range of gun ban statutes.

Yet the Obama campaign has been running ads in key states with large populations of gun owners and hunters, insisting he supports the right to own a gun. He cannot run away from his record.

Problems is this: I personally know many a gun enthusiast that support what they call "reasonable gun control". What is reasonable to one person is anathema to another!

Chris Bird, author of the exceptional Concealed Handgun Manual, reports: The NRA says there are 40 right-to-carry states. That includes Vermont which does not issue licenses so you don't need a license to carry open or concealed. Alaska is a shall-issue state but you don't need a license to carry in the open or concealed under current law. The state has kept the permit process going for Alaskans who want reciprocity with states in the Lower 48. (According to Obamma "lower 55")

There are three other states – Alabama, Connecticut and Iowa -- that the NRA considers right-to-carry because they say permits are almost always issued to law-abiding residents. I have no quarrel with Connecticut and Alabama but I do not count Iowa as I have talked to people in one state gun-rights organization and they say it depends on which county you live in. Some counties issue few if any licenses.

So I say there are 36 states that have mandatory issuance if a person qualifies: AK, AR, AZ, CO, FL, GA, ID, IN, KA, KY, LA, ME, MI, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WV, WY.

I use the terms license and permit interchangeably, though states are generally dedicated to the word they've chosen. Also note that some states issue permits for concealed weapons that include more than just a handgun, some issue licenses for concealed handguns only, or for any possession, or for a specific firearm listed on the permit. In my home state of Texas, the CHL is for a revolver only, or for semi-auto and revolver, at your choice.

Shooters, Greetings and happy September! Yup, its time once again to run our monthly match, only difference is that this month we will be having Classifiers only. Due to a high number of unclassified shooters, it is in order to do this.

For the classifier match this month only, we will be requirering "IDPA membership". What this means is that if you have not joined IDPA yet, you will not be able to shoot this Saturday, this match is reserved for the classification of IDPA members.

Shooters will need to plan on shooting a 90 round course straight thru. Bring extra ammo in case of a re shoot (re shoots will be explained if the need arises).All the standard fair applies EXCEPT:*Sign ups will be from 8:00am-8:30am*Entry fee is $20.

Wonderings

I read these two paragraphs in a Dean Koontz book (The Good Guy). They seemed somewhat telling, and I decided to include them in today’s post, for your introspection.



Contemporary Americans were so prosperous, so happily distracted by such a richness of vivid entertainments, they were reluctant to have their fun diminished by acknowledging that anything existed with fangs and fierce appetites. If now and then they recognized a wolf, they threw a bone to it and convinced themselves that it was a dog.

They denied real threats by focusing their fear on the least likely of armageddons: a massive asteroid striking the earth, superhurricanes twice as big as Texas, the Y2K implosion of civilization, nuclear power plants melting holes all the way through the planet, a new Hitler suddenly rising from the ranks of hapless televangelist with bad hair.

Texas: Teachers Can Carry Guns

A tiny Texas school district will allow teachers and staff members to carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings when classes begin this month, provided the gun-toting employees follow certain requirements. The community, Harrold, is about 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth. Ken Trump, a school security expert in Cleveland who advises districts nationwide, said Harrold was the first district with such a policy. For employees to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations; and must use ammunition designed to minimize the risk of ricocheting bullets.

DOW offering Huntmaster training this weekend

The Colorado Division Of Wildlife is hosting a two-day seminar on Huntmaster training Saturday and Sunday at the Northwest Regional headquarters, 711 Independent Ave.

Huntmasters are volunteers who have completed the special training and then pass their knowledge on to people who are beginning hunters or maybe never hunted before but want to learn.

You don’t have to be a Huntmaster to make a difference. Trained volunteers are needed as photographers, shooting instructors, cooks, registration officials and more. Interested volunteers may receive additional training to become certified Huntmasters.

The weekend Huntmaster training simulates a two-day hunt and prospective Huntmasters eat, sleep and work at the training site to get a realistic feeling for what the program demands.

Callahan finishes 25th, Snyder Takes 28th Place in Women’s 25m Pistol

The Women’s 25m Sport Pistol competition took place today at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall with Libby Callahan (Columbia, S.C.) taking 25th place, while Beki Snyder (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished 28th.

Fifty-six year old Libby Callahan (Columbia, S.C.), who is the oldest known American woman to compete for the U.S. at an Olympic Games (winter or summer), finished with a total score of 575.

“I made some mental airs that cost me from being competitive in the match,” said Callahan after her competition. “I am really disappointed, but I have enjoyed being here in Beijing for the Olympics and overall it’s been a great experience.”

Snyder (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who was competing in her second event of the 2008 Olympic Games, also earned an overall score of 575 points. Both Callahan and Snyder have competed in three previous Olympic Games.

Chen Ying of China won the gold medal with a final score of 793.4, which is a new Olympic record. Mongolia’s Otryad Gundegmaa earned the silver medal with 792.2 and the bronze went to Dorjsuren Munkhbayar of Germany with 789.2.

(Colorado) Concealed Weapons Permits Issued by County Sheriffs

In 2004 Colorado enacted Senate Bill 04-24, a law which established clear guidelines for the issuance of concealed weapon permits by sheriffs. One of the requirements of the law is that each sheriff submit an annual report to the legislature listing the number of permit applications received, the number of permits issued, the number denied and the number revoked. County Sheriffs of Colorado collected the data from sheriffs and submitted it in one report. This information was included in County Sheriffs Magazine so that members and other readers may see the permit activity that each county has reported.

Colorado 18-12-204. Permit contents – validity – carrying requirements

(1) (a) Each permit shall bear a color photograph of the permittee and shall display the signature of the sheriff who issues the permit. In addition, the sheriffs of this state shall ensure that all permits issued pursuant to this part 2 contain the same items of information and are the same size and the same color.

(b) A permit is valid for a period of five years after the date of issuance and may be renewed as provided in section 18-12-211. A permit issued pursuant to this part 2, including a temporary emergency permit issued pursuant to section 18-12-209, is effective in all areas of the state, except as otherwise provided in section 18-12-214.

(2) (a) A permittee, in compliance with the terms of a permit, may carry a concealed handgun as allowed by state law. The permittee shall carry the permit, together with valid photo identification, at all times during which the permittee is in actual possession of a concealed handgun and shall produce both documents upon demand by a law enforcement officer. Failure to produce a permit upon demand by a law enforcement officer raises a rebuttable presumption that the person does not have a permit. Failure to carry and produce a permit and valid photo identification upon demand as required in this subsection (2) is a class 1 petty offense. A charge of failure to carry and produce a permit and valid photo identification upon demand pursuant to this subsection (2) shall be dismissed by the court if, at or before the permittee's scheduled court appearance, the permittee exhibits to the court a valid permit and valid photo identification, both of which were issued to the permittee prior to the date on which the permittee was charged with failure to carry and produce a permit and valid photo identification upon demand.

(b) The provisions of paragraph (a) of this subsection (2) apply to temporary emergency permits issued pursuant to section 18-12-209.

(3) (a) A person who may lawfully possess a handgun may carry a handgun under the following circumstances without obtaining a permit and the handgun shall not be considered concealed:

(I) The handgun is in the possession of a person who is in a private automobile or in some other private means of conveyance and who carries the handgun for a legal use, including self-defense; or

(II) The handgun is in the possession of a person who is legally engaged in hunting activities within the state.

(b) The provisions of this subsection (3) shall not be construed to authorize the carrying of a handgun in violation of the provisions of section 18-12-105 or 18-12-105.5.
